No matter how adventurous, resilient, or pragmatic we are, the prospect of moving abroad and navigating the path to a secure retirement on a limited budget can be daunting.

Embarking on the journey of relocating to a new country is like drinking from a fire hose. Even for those who love the unexpected challenges, the uncertainty of financial stability in a foreign land can be unsettling. It is important to retire smartly without fear.

We Moved from USA to Portugal

Two years ago, my family and I made the courageous move from the USA to Portugal, embracing a lifestyle with a monthly budget of around $2700. In this pursuit, fear inevitably crept in.

Our concerns extended beyond the physical safety inherent in adjusting to a new environment or potential health challenges. Financial anxieties loomed large, as we grappled with making ends meet in a different economic landscape. Worry of not finding suitable healthcare or facing unexpected expenses added to the mounting apprehension.

New Can Be Scary

Whether the fear was rooted in the uncertainties of starting anew—be it at a different country, living away from family or away from familiar faces, wondering how we would make new friends, communicate in a new language...—the emotions were valid. It's crucial to acknowledge that fear is a universal experience, irrespective of our individual strengths and resilience. The key lies in granting ourselves the permission to feel scared without shame or embarrassment.

Acknowledge Fears

Recognizing our fears is the first step towards easing our minds. While it may require more than mere acknowledgment to overcome these fears, understanding that life's uncertainties are a natural part of the journey can offer some solace, at least. Permitting ourselves to be scared is a pathway to navigating and ultimately letting go of our fears.

Gain control By Sharing with Others

Additionally, sharing our fears with others is a powerful means of alleviating their weight. By vocalizing our worries, we prevent them from becoming overwhelming, as we don't allow them to fester as pent-up emotions within us. This act of sharing not only lightens our burden but also reinforces that we are not alone in our struggles.

In the context of our relocation, acknowledging the financial constraints and uncertainties, discussing them openly, and seeking advice from others who have treaded similar paths has been invaluable. As we plot our own course, and navigate our journey towards a fulfilling retirement abroad on a limited budget, it is essential to remember that we are not alone in our fears, and by sharing them, we strengthen the bonds that sustain not only us, but those we share with as we all go through the twists and turns of life.
